Houston
Theater - The Theater District in downtown
Houston is a world class entertainment destination
with over 2 million people visiting annually. The
17 block area is home to eight professional perfoming
arts organizations and five beautiful theaters. The
Wortham Theater Center has two theaters
with elaborate lobbies and ample space for the performers
and supporting personnel. The 2,367 seat Alice and
George Brown Theater is home to the Houston Ballet,
the Houston Grand Opera and Theater Under the Stars.
Its sister theater, the Lillie and Roy Cullen seats
1100,offers enough space for smaller productions of
the ballet and opera. The Alley Theater is
just down the street from the Wortham and has a castle
like appearance with its nine towers and open air
terraces. The inside is just as elegant with a grand
spiral staircase. The Alley has two stages, the Large,
which seats 824 and the Neuhaus Arena, which can accomodate
296 patrons.
Jones Hall is a spectacular place
to go with 60 foot ceilings, teakwood and marble accents
and crimson colored carpet to lead you to your seats.
The height of the ceiling is not the only magnificent
thing about it. It can actually move so the theater
can shrink down to 1800 seats, or expand for larger
gatherings to 3,00o seats. It is home to the Houston
Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts,
and the Houston Broadway Series. Around the corner
from Jones Hall is the Hobby Center for the Performing
Arts. Opened in May of 2002, Theater Under the Stars
and the Houston Broadway Series perform here. Within
the Hobby Center is Sarofim Hall, a delightfully ornate
2650 seater and the Zilkha Hall, smaller with only
500 seats, but it has a full orchestra pit. The Verizon
Wireless Theater has concerts year long of
many types. From classical and jazz to pop/rock, it
is always alive with music. All of the theaters offer
parking in monitored garages that are often attached
or directly across the street. The Hobby Center
has on site parking and valet service. Parking
rates will vary, so check with the theater before
you go to see a show.
With all of these great Theaters in Houston
and internationally acclaimed companies to perform
the shows, catching a matinee or spending an evening
in the Houston Theater District is surely a treat.
